Austin Riley Donates $3.3 Million to Build a Shelter for Homeless Children in Southaven: The Deed Touches Everyone.Y1

July 7, 2025 by mrs a

Atlanta Braves third baseman Austin Riley returned to his hometown not with a bat in hand, but with a mission from the heart — announcing a $3.3 million personal donation to build Riley’s Haven, a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth in Southaven.

“Some victories aren’t measured on scoreboards,” Riley said through emotion. “This is about making sure every kid in Southaven has a safe place to lay their head at night, a warm meal, and someone who believes in them.”

The powerful statement brought tears to the eyes of many in the crowd — from former teachers to lifelong friends — all of whom knew Riley long before he became a Major League star. For them, this wasn’t a surprise. Riley’s promise to give back wasn’t just a recent idea — it was a childhood vow.

Third-grade teacher Mrs. Jenkins vividly remembers Riley’s drive and compassion. “He told me at nine years old, ‘I’m going to make it big someday and help everybody,’” she said, holding back tears. “And he meant it.”

The new shelter will break ground next month on Southaven’s east side. Designed to serve up to 40 homeless youth at a time, Riley’s Haven will provide not only emergency housing but also mental health support, educational resources, job training, and — fittingly — a baseball field.

“This place made me who I am,” Riley said. “Now it’s my turn to help others find their dream.”

Riley’s inspiration came not from headlines, but hard truths. Youth homelessness in DeSoto County has surged 27% in the last five years. Many teens are forced to couch-surf, live in vehicles, or stay in unsafe environments. Until now, the nearest dedicated shelter was over 30 miles away.

Southaven Mayor Caroline Wilson recalled how Riley approached the project with quiet determination. “He didn’t want headlines. He just asked, ‘What do our kids need most?’ That’s who Austin is.”

For 16-year-old Marcus Taylor, who’s been without a home for eight months, Riley’s Haven is more than a building — it’s hope. “Sometimes, it feels like no one sees you,” Marcus said, adjusting a Braves cap signed by Riley years ago. “But then someone like Austin shows up and reminds you that you matter.”

Standing beside Riley during the announcement was his wife, Anna — a former social worker who played a key role in shaping the shelter’s comprehensive programs.

“It’s not just about beds,” Anna explained. “It’s about giving these kids a space where they can heal, grow, and believe in their future.”

The facility’s layout includes private study rooms, community gathering areas, and counseling spaces — all designed to treat each child with dignity and care.

One of the Largest Personal Donations in Mississippi’s History

Unlike many high-profile donations tied to foundations or endorsements, Riley’s $3.3 million gift is entirely personal. His agent confirmed, “This isn’t about tax breaks. This is Austin’s heart — and his money — going directly into the community he loves.”

Local coach Derek Patterson, Riley’s childhood friend, wasn’t surprised. “He’s always been the kind of guy who gives everything he’s got. That hasn’t changed.”

As the ceremony drew to a close, Riley walked across the empty lot where Riley’s Haven will soon rise. He bent to pick up a lone baseball, gently tossing it in his hand.

“People call baseball players heroes,” he said quietly. “But the real heroes are these kids who keep pushing forward, even when life’s throwing them curveballs.”

The shelter is expected to open by Christmas — a timeline Riley specifically requested. “Every child deserves to feel at home during the holidays,” he said.

A Dreamer, A Doer, A Difference-Maker

As the sun dipped behind the familiar rooftops of Southaven, Austin Riley stood with eyes full of purpose. The same streets where he once chased baseball dreams are now where he plants the seeds of hope for future generations.

“This town never stopped believing in me,” Riley said. “And I’ll never stop believing in it.”
