“When Kylie Rose Engelhardt was walking down the streets of Wisconsin, she came across an abandoned dog tied to a fire hydrant, along with a backpack and a heart-wrenching note. The note explained that the owner could no longer care for the dog, leaving Kylie to believe that the owner would return shortly. However, as time passed, it became clear that no one was coming back for the pup, affectionately named Baby Girl.
In a heartwarming gesture of compassion, Kylie sat with Baby Girl for an hour, keeping her warm and hoping for the owner’s return. Beside Baby Girl lay a backpack filled with all her favorite things – food, treats, and toys. But when it was evident that Baby Girl had been abandoned, Kylie took her to the Wisconsin Humane Society, sharing her emotional journey on Facebook, saying, ‘I did my best, everyone. Trust me, it breaks my heart, too.’
The image of Baby Girl left alone with her belongings quickly garnered attention, and according to the shelter, the 5-year-old dog is thriving in their care.
It turns out, the owner, a homeless woman battling chemotherapy and medical challenges, had no choice but to part with her beloved companion. She desperately called multiple places, begging for help, but the shelter couldn’t take Baby Girl until a later date, a situation she couldn’t afford. So, she made the agonizing decision to leave Baby Girl tied to the hydrant, knowing she’d be safe from traffic and quickly found.
In her own words, the owner shared, ‘It was the worst, the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. When I put her on the hydrant, I saw her face, like, mom, what’s going on here? She was my life, but I know she’s going to be in a better place. I do. I hope she finds a fantastic family. She deserves it.’
The Wisconsin Humane Society posted a touching Facebook message, thanking the owner for doing the best she could for her dog, despite facing her own hardships.
The heartfelt message read, ‘First and foremost, we’re so sorry you had to part with your stylish friend. It’s evident how much you loved her, even while struggling with your own medical complications and life’s challenges. We see your love in the bag you carefully packed with all her favorite belongings. We see your love in the way you secured her leash to keep her safe from traffic. We see your love in placing her in a neighborhood where she’d be quickly discovered. We see your love in the note you left, pleading for someone to help her when you no longer could.’
The Humane Society assured the owner that Baby Girl was safe, receiving plenty of love and attention. This post was liked over 18,000 times and shared more than 3,000 times.
Baby Girl is thriving at the shelter, enjoying walks, toys, and eagerly performing tricks for treats. She’s a happy and affectionate pup. The Wisconsin Humane Society added, ‘Rest assured that she’s safe, getting tons of attention from our team, and she’s on track to find her next loving family very soon. You can rest a little easier knowing your Baby Girl has a bright future ahead.’”
