Adam Scott and Rob Lowe didn’t quite realize what they were getting into when joining the cast of Parks and Recreation.
On a recent episode of Rob Lowe’s Literally! With Rob Lowe podcast, Scott, 51, admitted he and Lowe, 60, didn’t know exactly what they were doing in their first scenes on the beloved NBC comedy series.
“I remember waiting for our cue to walk into that very first scene. That was our first scene on camera. We’re standing behind the door. Just met. And in we go. And it’s Ben Wyatt and Chris Traeger. We didn’t know what the f— we were doing,” Lowe said.
“I remember after the first take, [director] Dean Holland coming up and being like, so it is like a mock documentary, that’s what we’re doing, but you don’t need to keep looking at the camera,” Scott said. “You don’t need to notice it at all. We’ll do talking head interviews later and stuff. I guess I was acting like, why is this cameraman here? I didn’t know what to do.”
Lowe complimented how Scott’s character grew into the show, adding, “You were the master of the look to camera.”
“Not that I was a master of anything, but you’re right that we did end up doing the thing where we would look at it camera sometimes for a punchline kind of thing,” Scott admitted.

Scott reminisced about how the show came together as the pair worked on it after joining at the end of season 2.
“They really started finding it on the road. They were figuring it out as they went. And then even when we came in, if you watch those early episodes, when we joined the show had sped up so much. It was like, six jokes a page, it was just going. It’s just interesting to see how a show evolves as it goes,” Scott shared.
In addition to Scott and Lowe, the series starred Amy Poehler, Chris Pratt, Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, Rashida Jones, Aubrey Plaza, Jim O’Heir and Retta. Parks and Recreation ran for seven seasons from 2009 to 2015.
Though nearly a decade has passed since the sitcom has been on air, Scott admitted he can’t watch the series anymore.
“There’s something that I miss so much, which is why I never watch Parks because it just makes me sad,” Scott shared. “It makes me just miss everybody and I didn’t feel like I ever took it for granted because I was always appreciative of how lucky we were, but it was just such a great place to go every day. Having that job … we were really lucky.”

Lowe added that not every show builds the same connections this cast did.
“Not every job has the long-lasting friendships either. And that kind of connection. It’s a little mercenary sometimes,” Lowe said. “You and Pratt and Amy and just everybody, Aubrey, everybody, we’re all in our thread, we’re all there for each other. I think that’s a function of the kind of shows that [creator] Mike Schur puts together as well.”
