We look back at some of the astonishing events that will soon lead to Donald Trump's unlikely return to the White House.

**Trump Makes Historic Political Comeback, Wins 47th Presidency**

**WASHINGTON (AP)** — In a stunning political comeback, Donald Trump has been elected the 47th president of the United States, marking an extraordinary reversal from his loss in 2020. His victory, achieved after a bitterly contested and deeply polarized campaign, solidifies his resilience in the face of numerous challenges, including his refusal to concede four years ago, his involvement in the Capitol insurrection, felony charges, and surviving two assassination attempts.

Trump clinched the win with a decisive victory in Wisconsin, securing the critical 270 electoral votes needed to take the White House. He further solidified his lead by winning Michigan and Pennsylvania—key battleground states that had flipped to President Joe Biden in 2020 but returned to Trump’s column in this election.

Following his victory, Vice President Kamala Harris, who became the Democratic nominee after Biden’s exit, conceded the race in a call to Trump, offering her congratulations. President Biden also called Trump to congratulate him and begin the transition of power. Shortly afterward, Biden reached out to Harris to acknowledge her efforts throughout the campaign.

Trump’s victory quickly garnered international recognition, with leaders including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and French President Emmanuel Macron congratulating him on his win.

The result underscores the continued power of Trump’s combative, populist style. His rhetoric, often targeting Harris and painting a bleak picture of America overrun by violent migrants, resonated with many voters, particularly those frustrated by economic hardship and cultural division. His message of protecting America and championing the interests of white working-class voters struck a chord with a nation deeply divided along political, cultural, and economic lines.

“I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor of being elected your 47th president and your 45th president,” Trump told his supporters in Florida, even before the final results were confirmed.

Trump outperformed his 2020 performance in several key swing states, while Harris struggled to replicate Biden’s success in these critical regions. With Republicans now controlling the Senate, Trump’s second term is expected to feature a more unified Congress, although control of the House remains uncertain.

“We’ve been through so much together, and today you showed up in record numbers to deliver a victory,” Trump declared in his victory speech. “This was something special, and we’re going to pay you back.”

The news of Trump’s win sent the stock market soaring, with major indices—including Tesla, banks, and cryptocurrencies—seeing significant gains. Investors reacted positively, signaling confidence in a smooth election outcome and optimism about Trump’s return to the White House. In his second term, Trump has vowed to reshape the federal government and seek retribution against those he views as his political adversaries.

This election was one of the most dramatic in modern U.S. history, marked by two assassination attempts on Trump and the sudden emergence of a new Democratic challenger. As Trump prepares to take office on January 20, he faces a range of challenges, from deep political polarization at home to global crises that threaten America’s influence on the world stage.

Trump’s victory over Harris—the first woman of color to head a major party ticket—also highlights his ability to defeat a female opponent for the second time in a general election. Despite an early surge of support after Biden’s withdrawal from the race, Harris’s campaign faltered as she struggled to connect with disillusioned voters and prove that she was a viable alternative to the previous administration.

Since the race was called, Harris has remained out of the public eye. She is scheduled to speak later Wednesday at Howard University, where supporters had gathered for a watch party as the results were still being tallied the night before.
