Former One Direction star Liam Payne was found dead after he fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires with police in Argentina describing the fall resulted in “extremely serious injuries.”

Police in the Argentine capital said in a statement on Wednesday that Payne, 31, fell from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel in the trendy Palermo neighbourhood. Medics confirmed his death in a statement.

Alberto Crescenti, the head of the state emergency medical system, said on Argentina’s Todo Noticias TV channel that the singer fell into a courtyard.

He added that the authorities were investigating the circumstances surrounding his death and were conducting an autopsy. Crescenti said in a statement: “At 17.04 through the 911 integrated public safety system, we were alerted of a person who was in an internal courtyard of the management of a south house hotel.

“At 17.11 a SAME team arrived and verified the death of this man and later we found out that he was a singer in a musical group. Unfortunately, he had injuries that were incompatible with life, as a result of his fall, so we had to confirm his death, there was no possibility of resuscitation.”

Media in Argentina reported Payne had been in Buenos Aires to attend the concert of his former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan. Payne had been documenting his travels across the South American country, including seeing his former bandmate.

Payne had been on holiday in Buenos Aires with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy when he fell from the hotel window.

He shot to stardom with One Direction bandmates Harry Styles, Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayne Malik. He made his debut as a singer in 2008 when he auditioned for the X Factor.

Payne had a 7-year-old son, Bear Grey Payne with his ex-girlfriend, musician Cheryl who was known as Cheryl Cole when she performed with Girls Aloud.

He is survived by his parents, Geoff and Karen Payne as well as his two older sisters, Ruth and Nicola. Representatives for Payne did not immediately return emails and calls, the Associated Press reported.
